Read the Fine Print
First tenent of risk management — read the contract’s fine print for the service being provided. Unless you are going into major life-savings surgery there is little that people provide that has such a short time fuse that a few minutes will matter. Make sure you aren’t paying to indemnify the provider for his own work. If you find an objectionable passage here are a few suggestions:
1. Draw a line through the offending sentence or paragraph and initial it.
2. If the provider objects and gives you the excuse, “I can’t modify a form contract.” Just say, “That’s okay I can,” or “Your competitor said they would,” or ” how much will you discount your price to keep it in.”
3. Walk away, the provider will usually come back.
4. If you don’t understand a paragraph or sentence ask for clarification.
Take your time, and if you don’t have the time pay someone to do it for you. it is money well spent.
